Wailea 670 Honua’ula Development: A Glimpse into Maui's Future

Nestled in the heart of South Maui, the Wailea 670 Honua’ula Development stands as a testament to the delicate balance between progress and preservation. Spanning a massive 670 acres, this mixed-use development promises to bring a blend of affordable housing, commercial spaces, and recreational areas to the region. But what does this mean for Maui and its residents?

Balancing The Environment with Housing Needs

The Wailea 670 Honua’ula Development, originally known as Wailea 670, is located just south of Maui Meadows and across the highway from the existing Wailea community. This culturally and environmentally sensitive area has been the subject of much debate and negotiation between the developer, the County of Maui, and organizations like Maui Unite and Sierra Club.

Recent archaeological and environmental studies commissioned by the developer revealed several hundred historic features and sites on the land. As a result, the recent approval for Phase II development by the Maui County Commission includes provisions for a protected area of 160 acres and a conservation easement.

Affordable Housing: A Cornerstone of the Development

One of the standout features of the Wailea 670 Honua’ula Development is its commitment to affordable housing. Plans include both single-family homes and multi-family units, with the specific price range for homes and condos to be determined in the future. This focus on affordability is a nod to the growing need for reasonably priced housing options in Maui.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Despite the recent approvals, the Wailea 670 Honua’ula Development still faces opposition from groups like the Maui Tomorrow Foundation and Hoʻoponopono O Mākena. A contested case hearing is currently underway, and further mediation is expected.

The project's history is rich, with its land zoning changed in the 1990s to allow for its development. The Maui County Council gave its authorization for Wailea 670 in 2008, with an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Environmental Assessment (EA) approved in 2012. However, a claim was filed questioning the original approval, indicating that the road to completion might still be long.

The Wailea 670 Honua’ula Development is more than just a construction project; it's a vision for Maui's future. As the island grapples with the challenges of growth, developments like these will play a crucial role in shaping its landscape. Only time will tell how this project will impact Maui, but one thing is clear: the conversation around it is far from over.
